HSK is the official Chinese proficiency test that Chinese universities and the CSC scholarship use to check Mandarin. It has six levels today, moves to a nine-level HSK 3.0 from December 2026, and is held at Confucius Institutes in Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad and Islamabad. Fees start near PKR 2,000.

What is the HSK exam for Pakistani students?
The HSK exam is China's official Mandarin proficiency test for non-native speakers, run by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation. Pakistani students take it to enter Chinese-taught degree programmes, strengthen CSC scholarship files, meet MBBS language expectations and show Chinese skills to employers working on CPEC projects.
HSK stands for Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, meaning Chinese proficiency test. It checks listening, reading and, from level 3, writing in simplified characters.
A separate speaking test, HSKK, is taken on its own. Some scholarships ask for both, so students read each requirement carefully. The wider admission route is in the study in China from Pakistan page, which covers costs, the X1 visa and the residence permit. Students also weighing Malaysia can read the study in Malaysia from Pakistan page, where most degrees are taught in English.
What are the six HSK levels and their vocabulary?
The current HSK has six levels. HSK 1 needs about 150 words and HSK 2 about 300, while HSK 3 needs 600 and HSK 4 needs 1,200. HSK 5 expects about 2,500 words and HSK 6 about 5,000. Each level adds harder reading, listening and writing tasks.
| Level | Vocabulary | Sections | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | ≈ 150 words | Listening, reading | Beginner certificate |
| HSK 2 | ≈ 300 words | Listening, reading | Basic daily Chinese |
| HSK 3 | ≈ 600 words | Listening, reading, writing | Language-year progress |
| HSK 4 | ≈ 1,200 words | Listening, reading, writing | Chinese-taught Bachelor's |
| HSK 5 | ≈ 2,500 words | Listening, reading, writing | Chinese-taught Master's |
| HSK 6 | ≈ 5,000 words | Listening, reading, writing | Advanced study and work |
Most Pakistani beginners reach HSK 3 after about one year of steady classes. HSK 4 usually takes another six months to a year of daily practice.
How does the new HSK 3.0 change the test?
HSK 3.0 replaces the six-level test with a three-stage, nine-level framework covering elementary, intermediate and advanced Chinese. The official Chinese testing website lists a worldwide launch on 13 December 2026. The new version tests a larger vocabulary and adds clearer skill profiles for each level.
Students who sit the exam before the switch still receive a valid result. Universities will accept both versions during the change, although each sets its own conversion rule.
Anyone starting Chinese now should use HSK 3.0 word lists. They include the old vocabulary, so nothing learned is wasted, and the extra words help with the newer exam format.

What is the HSK passing score for each level?
HSK 1 and HSK 2 are scored out of 200, with 120 needed to pass. HSK 3 to HSK 6 are scored out of 300, with 180 needed to pass. Universities often ask for a higher score than the pass mark, especially for competitive programmes and scholarships.
| Level | Total score | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 200 | 120 |
| HSK 2 | 200 | 120 |
| HSK 3 | 300 | 180 |
| HSK 4 | 300 | 180 |
| HSK 5 | 300 | 180 |
| HSK 6 | 300 | 180 |
Each section carries 100 marks. A strong reading score cannot fully hide a weak listening score, so balanced practice matters for students aiming at scholarships.
How much does the HSK exam cost in Pakistan in 2026?
Pakistani test centres listed HSK fees of about PKR 2,000 for HSK 1 and HSK 2, PKR 3,600 for HSK 3 and HSK 4, PKR 4,850 for HSK 5 and PKR 6,100 for HSK 6 in early 2026. Retakes cost the full fee again, with no discount.
| Level | Fee (PKR) | Retake |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | ≈ 2,000 | Full fee |
| HSK 2 | ≈ 2,000 | Full fee |
| HSK 3 | ≈ 3,600 | Full fee |
| HSK 4 | ≈ 3,600 | Full fee |
| HSK 5 | ≈ 4,850 | Full fee |
| HSK 6 | ≈ 6,100 | Full fee |
These figures come from a Pakistani language school and may differ between centres. HSKK speaking tests are charged separately.
Where are the HSK test centres in Pakistan?
HSK test centres in Pakistan include the Confucius Institutes at the University of Karachi, the University of the Punjab in Lahore and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, plus centres in Islamabad, Peshawar, Okara and Cadet College Petaro. Most offer the paper-based test, and few offer computer-based HSK.
| City | Centre | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi | Confucius Institute, University of Karachi | Paper |
| Lahore | Confucius Institute, University of the Punjab | Paper |
| Faisalabad | Confucius Institute, University of Agriculture | Paper |
| Islamabad | Confucius Institute NUML; CRI Confucius Classroom; AI-Hankao | Paper |
| Peshawar | Institute of Management Sciences | Paper |
| Okara | AI-Hankao Study & Exam Center | Paper and computer |
| Petaro | Confucius Classroom, Cadet College Petaro | Paper |
Centre activity changes between years. A 2026 post from NUML suggested HSK was not being held there, so Islamabad students should phone ahead before planning travel.
How do Pakistani students register for HSK?
Pakistani students register for HSK by creating an account on the official chinesetest.cn website, choosing the level, test date and Pakistani centre, uploading a passport-style photo and paying the fee as the centre instructs. Registration usually closes about a month before the exam date.
- 1Choose your level. Match it to the university or scholarship requirement.
- 2Create an account. Register on chinesetest.cn with your passport or CNIC details.
- 3Pick a date and centre. Select a Pakistani centre that runs your level.
- 4Upload a photo. Use a recent, plain-background photo.
- 5Pay the fee. Follow the centre's bank or cash instructions.
- 6Print the admission ticket. Bring it with your ID on exam day.
The University of Karachi's Confucius Institute ran registration from 9 to 19 October for its late-2025 session. Similar short windows are common, so students follow their centre's notice board and social pages.
Which HSK level do Chinese universities and CSC ask for?
Chinese-taught Bachelor's programmes usually ask for HSK 4, and Chinese-taught Master's and PhD programmes usually ask for HSK 5. English-taught programmes normally need IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or an English-medium letter instead. CSC scholarship holders on Chinese-taught courses often take a one-year language course first.
The CSC scholarship for Pakistani students page explains Type A and Type B seats and the CSCA test. Each programme still sets its own language rule.
Medical students face a different expectation. The MBBS in China page explains why many universities expect HSK 4 before the hospital internship. The universities in China page shows which top campuses teach in Chinese. Students choosing English-taught degrees can compare tests in the PTE vs IELTS page.
How can Pakistani students prepare for HSK quickly?
Pakistani students prepare for HSK by joining a Confucius Institute or private class, learning the official word list for their level, practising past papers under timed conditions, listening to Chinese audio daily and writing characters by hand. Most students need three to six months for each level above HSK 2.
- Learn 15–20 new words a day from the official list.
- Take one timed mock test each week.
- Listen to slow Chinese podcasts during travel.
- Write characters by hand, not only on a phone.
- Join a speaking group to prepare for HSKK.
Confucius Institutes in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad run semester classes linked to HSK levels. These classes keep fees low and give students a fixed timetable, which helps many learners stay consistent.
Students with a scholarship deadline should book the exam first. A fixed date turns casual study into a clear plan, and the score arrives in time for the application.
Which HSK mistakes should Pakistani students avoid?
The HSK mistakes Pakistani students most often make are booking a level higher than the programme needs, ignoring the listening section, using an expired score, assuming every centre runs every level, and forgetting the separate HSKK speaking test that some scholarships require. Each mistake costs time and fees.
- Booking HSK 5 when the course asks for HSK 4.
- Practising reading only and skipping listening.
- Sending a score older than two years.
- Travelling to a centre without confirming the level.
- Missing the HSKK speaking test when it is required.
A free China admission check with Hammad Study Abroad shows which level your target programme needs. The scholarships for Pakistani students page lists other funding options, and the statement of purpose page helps with the essay most Chinese universities request.
