YÖS is the entrance exam many Turkish universities use for international Bachelor's applicants. The central TR-YÖS is run by ÖSYM, has 80 questions on basic learning skills and maths, runs twice a year and stays valid for two years. Pakistani students can often replace it with SAT or FSc marks at private universities.

What is the YÖS exam for Turkish universities?
YÖS is the international student admission exam for Bachelor's programmes in Turkey. The central version, TR-YÖS, is prepared by ÖSYM, Turkey's Measuring, Selection and Placement Centre, and accepted by many public and foundation universities. Several universities also run their own YÖS tests for their own admissions.
YÖS stands for Yabancı Öğrenci Sınavı, meaning foreign student exam. The test checks reasoning and maths rather than subject knowledge from FSc.
Turkey's wider admission route is explained in the study in Turkey from Pakistan page. The guide covers fees, visas and the residence permit.
What is the TR-YÖS exam format?
TR-YÖS has 80 multiple-choice questions split between basic learning skills, which test reasoning and problem solving, and mathematics and geometry. University information pages list a duration of about 100 minutes. Candidates can usually choose the exam language, including English and Turkish.
| Feature | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Organiser | ÖSYM | Study in Türkiye |
| Questions | 80 multiple-choice | Study in Türkiye, Tarsus University |
| Sections | Basic learning skills, maths, geometry | Study in Türkiye |
| Duration | About 100 minutes | Tarsus University |
| Languages | Several, including English and Turkish | Study in Türkiye |
| Validity | 2 years | Study in Türkiye |
Basic learning skills questions look like IQ-style reasoning puzzles. Pakistani FSc maths covers most of the maths and geometry content.
When is TR-YÖS held each year?
TR-YÖS is usually held twice a year. TR-YÖS/1 applications opened in January 2026 for a spring exam, and TR-YÖS/2 took place in October in recent years. In Pakistan, the 2025 session listed a 12 March registration deadline and an 11 May exam through Pak-Turk Maarif.
| Session | Typical application | Typical exam |
|---|---|---|
| TR-YÖS/1 | January – March | Spring (April – May) |
| TR-YÖS/2 | Summer | October |
| Pakistan 2025 (Maarif) | By 12 March 2025 | 11 May 2025 |
| University YÖS tests | Set by each university | Spring or summer |
| Result use | Two admission years | Valid 2 years |
Dates for 2027 had not been published when this guide was updated. Students check ÖSYM, Pak-Turk Maarif and the Turkish Embassy Islamabad announcements each winter.
How do Pakistani students register for TR-YÖS?
Pakistani students register for TR-YÖS online through ÖSYM's application system or the Pakistan centre announced for the session, upload a photo and passport details, pay the exam fee, choose the exam language and centre, then download the entry document before the exam day.
- 1Check the session. Read the ÖSYM and Pak-Turk Maarif announcement for dates and centre.
- 2Create an account. Register on the ÖSYM international application system.
- 3Enter details. Add passport, school and contact details exactly as on documents.
- 4Upload a photo. Use a recent passport-style photo that meets the stated rules.
- 5Pay the fee. The 2025 Pakistan fee was 1,250 TL (about 35 USD); confirm the current fee.
- 6Print the entry document. Bring it with the passport on exam day.
Students preparing documents at the same time should finish IBCC work early. The IBCC equivalence page explains timing for A Level students.
Do all Turkish universities require YÖS?
No. Many Turkish public universities ask for TR-YÖS or SAT, while many private foundation universities admit Pakistani students on FSc, ICS or A Level marks alone. Some universities accept their own YÖS, the SAT, Abitur or the IB instead. Türkiye Bursları does not require YÖS.
- Public universities: often TR-YÖS or SAT with minimum scores.
- Private foundation universities: often FSc or A Level marks.
- Competitive programmes such as medicine: higher scores where tests apply.
- Türkiye Bursları: no YÖS needed for the scholarship application.
Scholarship applicants should read the Türkiye Bursları scholarship page. Medical applicants should read the MBBS in Turkey for Pakistani students page for PMDC rules.
How should Pakistani students prepare for YÖS?
Pakistani students prepare for YÖS by revising FSc maths and geometry, practising basic learning skills reasoning questions daily, taking timed full-length past papers and reviewing mistakes. Most students need six to ten weeks of steady practice, and students aiming for medicine or engineering need more.
Reasoning questions are the unfamiliar part for most Pakistani students. Daily timed sets of twenty questions build speed faster than long weekend sessions.
Some universities accept SAT instead of YÖS. Students comparing Turkey with Hungary can read the study in Hungary from Pakistan page, and the study in Europe from Pakistan page covers other low-fee options.
How do Turkish universities use YÖS scores?
Turkish universities use YÖS scores to rank international applicants, often combined with school marks. Each university sets its own minimum score for each programme, and popular subjects such as medicine, engineering and computer science ask for higher scores. Some universities admit applicants in score order until places are filled.
Minimum scores change every year. Students read each university's international admission guide for the current cut-off before applying.
A strong FSc or A Level record still helps. Several universities weight school marks alongside the test, so a weaker YÖS score can be balanced by high marks.
Students who sit more than one YÖS exam usually submit their best score. Each university's guide states whether it accepts TR-YÖS only or also its own exam, so collecting this list early helps decide which tests to book.
Applications usually open between January and July, and results are published in stages. Applying to several universities with the same score keeps options open until the final placement list appears.
Keep copies of the score report, passport and school documents ready in one folder. Most Turkish university portals ask for the same uploads, and a complete folder makes it easy to apply to five or six universities in one week.
Students who score well should apply widely. The Turkey university fees and admission page lists public and private university fees, and the PTE vs IELTS page helps with the English score many English-taught programmes also ask for.
Which YÖS mistakes do Pakistani students make?
The YÖS mistakes Pakistani students most often make are assuming every Turkish university needs the exam, missing the Pakistan registration deadline, ignoring basic learning skills practice, choosing an exam language they read slowly and forgetting that one score can serve two admission years.
- Assuming all Turkish universities require YÖS.
- Missing the Pakistan centre's registration deadline.
- Practising maths only and skipping reasoning questions.
- Choosing an exam language you read slowly.
- Retaking needlessly when a valid score already exists.

YÖS exam, frequently asked questions
What is the YÖS exam?
YÖS is the entrance exam for international students applying to Bachelor's programmes at Turkish universities. The central version, TR-YÖS, is run by ÖSYM, Turkey's measuring and placement centre. Some universities also run their own YÖS tests or accept SAT and school marks instead.
How many questions are in TR-YÖS?
TR-YÖS has 80 multiple-choice questions covering basic learning skills, mathematics and geometry. University information pages list a duration of about 100 minutes. The exam is available in several languages, including English and Turkish. Each question carries equal weight, so speed and accuracy both matter.
How long is a YÖS score valid?
A TR-YÖS result is generally valid for two years, according to Study in Türkiye and the Turkish Embassy in Islamabad. Students can use one score for applications in two consecutive years if the university still accepts it. Check validity before paying for a retake.
Is YÖS required for Pakistani students?
Not always. Many Turkish public universities ask for TR-YÖS or SAT, while many private universities admit Pakistani students on FSc or A Level marks alone. Türkiye Bursları does not need YÖS. Each university's international admission page lists the accepted tests.
Where can Pakistani students take TR-YÖS?
TR-YÖS has been offered in Pakistan through the Pak-Turk Maarif International Schools network. For the 2025 session, Pak-Turk Maarif listed a 12 March registration deadline, an 11 May exam and a 1,250 TL fee. Students confirm the current centre and dates each year.
Is YÖS needed for MBBS in Turkey?
Some Turkish medical faculties ask for TR-YÖS or SAT with high scores, and others admit on FSc marks. Pakistani medical students must also meet PMDC rules, including the MDCAT requirement, before studying medicine abroad. Check both the university and PMDC rules first.
