Germany Student Visa from Pakistan: 2026 Requirements, Documents and Embassy Process

A Germany student visa from Pakistan is a national (D) visa for degree study, applied for online through the Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal. Pakistani students need a German admission letter, €11,904 in funds proof, attested documents, health insurance and a €75 fee. Processing takes about 4–6 weeks once the file reaches an appointment.

What is the German student visa for Pakistani students?

The German student visa is a national D visa issued under Section 16b of the German Residence Act for stays longer than 90 days. Pakistani students use the visa to enter Germany for a Bachelor's, Master's, PhD or Studienkolleg, then exchange the visa for a residence permit for study at the local foreigners office.

A German national visa is different from a Schengen C visa, which covers short visits of up to 90 days. Pakistani students must never travel on a Schengen visit visa to start a degree, because a visit visa cannot be converted into a study permit inside Germany.

Two related categories exist. The student applicant visa under Section 17 suits applicants still waiting for admission, and a separate language-course visa covers standalone German classes. FSc holders heading to a preparatory year should read the Studienkolleg route after FSc. University choice, grades and study costs are covered in the complete study in Germany page. Paid vocational training uses a different permit, explained in the Ausbildung visa route.

Which documents does the German embassy require for a study visa?

The German embassy requires a valid passport, a university admission letter, €11,904 in funds proof, language proof when not confirmed by the university, attested degrees and transcripts, a motivation letter, a CV, health insurance and the signed application with biometric photos. The Consular Services Portal shows the exact list after the questionnaire.

  • Valid Pakistani passport with at least two empty pages, plus a copy of the data page.
  • Admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid) from a German university or Studienkolleg, stating the language of instruction.
  • Proof of €11,904 for one year: a blocked account confirmation, a Verpflichtungserklärung or a scholarship award letter.
  • Language proof (IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF or Goethe) when the admission letter does not confirm it.
  • HEC-attested degrees and transcripts, and IBCC-attested Matric and FSc certificates.
  • Motivation letter and CV explaining your studies, the course choice and your career plan.
  • Travel health insurance for the first weeks, followed by German statutory or approved student insurance.
  • Completed application form and Section 54 declaration, with biometric photos (35 × 45 mm).

Every scan should be clear, complete and named by document type. The German Embassy Islamabad warns that incomplete applications cause delays, and each correction request pushes the file back in the queue. The same attested set is used earlier in the uni-assist application to German universities.

Pakistani applicants do not need the APS certificate, which applies only to China, Vietnam and India. The official checklist sits on the German missions in Pakistan student visa page.

How much money must you show for a German study visa?

Pakistani students must show at least €11,904 for one year, equal to €992 per month, to get a German study visa. Accepted proofs are a blocked account, a formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a sponsor living in Germany, or a scholarship such as DAAD covering living costs. A Pakistani bank statement alone is not accepted.

  • Blocked account: the most common proof; the embassy needs the official opening and deposit confirmation.
  • Verpflichtungserklärung: signed at a German foreigners office by a sponsor with enough income in Germany.
  • Scholarship letter: accepted when the award covers at least €992 a month.
  • Combination: a partial scholarship topped up with a smaller blocked account deposit.

The €11,904 amount is set by the German government and is reviewed every year. Choosing a provider, the transfer from a Pakistani bank and monthly withdrawals are explained in the German blocked account for Pakistanis page.

Students who receive funding can replace part of the deposit. German awards for Pakistanis are covered in the DAAD scholarship page.

How do you apply through the Consular Services Portal step by step?

Pakistani students apply for the German study visa through the Consular Services Portal in seven steps: secure admission, prepare funds proof, register in the study category, upload documents, wait for screening, attend the appointment and track the decision. The appointment is offered only after a visa officer accepts the uploaded file as complete.

  1. 1Secure the admission. Accept the offer from the German university and download the official admission letter.
  2. 2Prepare the funds proof. Open the blocked account early, because the embassy wants the official opening and deposit confirmation.
  3. 3Register on the Consular Services Portal. Choose the study category on digital.diplo.de and answer the interactive questionnaire.
  4. 4Upload every document. Scan all papers in readable PDF form; the checklist appears after the questionnaire.
  5. 5Wait for the first screening. A visa officer reviews the file and either asks for corrections or sends an appointment notice.
  6. 6Attend the appointment. Bring originals, give fingerprints and pay the €75 fee in cash in rupees.
  7. 7Track the decision. Processing usually takes 4–6 weeks after the appointment; then collect the passport with the D visa.

Portal versus the old VIDEX waiting list

Older guides describe the VIDEX form and the RK-Termin waiting list. The Consular Services Portal replaced the waiting list for student visas, so documents now come first and the appointment follows.

Applicants who already hold an old waiting-list appointment can still attend on that date. Everyone else starts on the Consular Services Portal study application.

Islamabad or Karachi: where do Pakistani students apply?

Pakistani students apply at the German mission responsible for their place of residence. The German Embassy Islamabad covers Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The German Consulate General Karachi covers Sindh and Balochistan. Applying at the wrong mission leads to cancellation of the appointment.

  • German Embassy Islamabad: residents of Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK, through the Consular Services Portal.
  • German Consulate General Karachi: residents of Sindh and Balochistan, on the Consular Services Portal since 12 December 2025.
  • Pakistanis living abroad: the German mission in the country of legal residence.
  • Wrong mission: the application or appointment is cancelled, and the queue restarts.

Residence is judged by the address on the CNIC or proof of current living. A student from Lahore studying in Karachi should check which mission accepts the file before registering.

What does the Germany student visa cost in Pakistani rupees?

The German student visa fee is €75, listed by VFS Global Pakistan as PKR 24,100, paid in cash in rupees at the appointment. Total visa-stage costs, excluding the €11,904 blocked deposit that remains your own money, come to roughly PKR 60,000–1.2 lakh once account set-up, travel insurance, attestation, translations and photos are included.

Germany student visa costs for Pakistani applicants in euros and PKR
Cost itemAmount (EUR)Approx. in PKR
National D visa fee€75PKR 24,100 (VFS rate, paid in cash)
Blocked account deposit€11,904≈ PKR 38 lakh (your own money)
Blocked account set-up fee≈ €50 – €150≈ PKR 16,000 – 48,000
Travel health insurance (first weeks)≈ €30 – €80≈ PKR 10,000 – 26,000
HEC and IBCC attestation-≈ PKR 5,000 – 15,000
Translations and photos-≈ PKR 3,000 – 10,000

PKR figures use €1 ≈ PKR 320 (3 Oct 2026). The embassy converts the €75 fee at its own rate, and set-up and insurance prices vary by provider. Fees for each provider are compared in Expatrio vs Fintiba for Pakistanis.

How long is the German student visa waiting time from Pakistan?

The German student visa waiting time from Pakistan has two parts: the queue before your file is screened and the 4–6 week decision after the appointment. The queue can run for several months in peak season, because the German missions say student demand still exceeds their capacity. Applying immediately after admission is the safest plan.

  • Register on the portal the same week the admission letter arrives.
  • Upload a complete file the first time, since correction requests restart the review.
  • Ask the university for a late-arrival confirmation if the semester start is close.
  • Plan for winter-semester demand peaks between May and September.

The German embassy asks applicants not to send repeated status inquiries, because answering them slows processing. A letter from the university accepting late arrival or deferring enrolment to the next semester helps the file move forward. Applying early to universities, using the German winter and summer intake deadlines, leaves the most time for the visa queue.

What do German visa officers check in your study file?

German visa officers check whether the study plan is genuine and logical: the link between previous studies and the course, the reasons for choosing Germany, realistic funding and the applicant's language ability. Officers in Islamabad and Karachi may ask short questions at the appointment, and the motivation letter carries most of the weight.

What a strong motivation letter answers

  • What you studied before and how the German course builds on it.
  • Why this university and this programme, with one or two module names.
  • Why Germany rather than Pakistan or another country.
  • How the €11,904 and later costs are funded.
  • What career you plan after graduation.

Copying a template motivation letter is a common error. German officers read thousands of letters, and identical wording from several applicants raises doubts about the whole file. Picking a course that matches your Bachelor's, as shown in the German university types guide, makes the letter easier to write.

Why are German student visas refused, and what can you do next?

German student visas from Pakistan are refused mainly for weak study plans, unrelated courses, missing funds proof or doubtful documents. Since 1 July 2025 the Federal Foreign Office has abolished the remonstration appeal, so a refused applicant either submits a new, stronger application or challenges the decision before the Administrative Court in Berlin.

  • Motivation letter that does not explain why this course, why Germany and how it fits earlier studies.
  • A Master's unrelated to the Bachelor's, or a large unexplained gap after graduation.
  • Funds proof missing, short of €11,904 or deposited after the application.
  • Attested documents that German officers cannot verify or that show inconsistencies.
  • Weak spoken English or German compared with the language level on the certificate.
  • Private institute admissions where the course looks like a route to work rather than study.

Refusal notices now explain the reasons in more detail than before. A new application should fix each stated reason directly with fresh evidence instead of resubmitting the same file.

Court action takes months and rarely suits a student waiting for a semester. Most Pakistani applicants gain more by deferring the admission and reapplying with a stronger file.

What happens after you land in Germany on a student visa?

After landing in Germany on a student visa, Pakistani students register their address at the Bürgeramt within two weeks, enrol at the university, activate health insurance and the blocked account, and then apply at the Ausländerbehörde for a residence permit for study before the D visa expires.

  1. 1Register your address (Anmeldung). Book the Bürgeramt appointment early, since big cities have long queues.
  2. 2Enrol at the university. Submit originals and pay the semester contribution.
  3. 3Activate insurance and the blocked account. Switch to student health insurance and start the €992 monthly payouts.
  4. 4Open a German bank account. Blocked account payouts and salaries need a local current account.
  5. 5Apply for the residence permit. Book the Ausländerbehörde appointment well before the visa end date.

The residence permit is renewed while study progress continues. Students still choosing between Germany and other low-fee countries can compare options in the study in Europe from Pakistan comparison.

A second pair of eyes on the file before upload prevents most refusals. A free German visa file check with our education consultants in Pakistan reviews the motivation letter, funds proof and attestations before you submit.

Germany student visa from Pakistan, frequently asked questions

Is IELTS required for a Germany student visa?

IELTS is required for the Germany student visa only when the university asks for English proof and the admission letter does not already confirm your language level. Applicants with an MOI letter accepted by the university can still apply, although German visa officers may test spoken English when the file and the interview do not match.

Can I take my spouse to Germany on a student visa?

Yes, a spouse can apply for a family reunion visa to join a Pakistani student in Germany. The student must show enough money and living space for both, which means funds well above the €11,904 single-student amount. The spouse usually needs basic German at A1 level, with some exceptions set by German residence law.

Can I apply for a German student visa without an admission letter?

Yes. A student applicant visa under Section 17 of the Residence Act lets a Pakistani applicant stay in Germany for up to nine months to apply to universities or sit entrance exams. The applicant still needs full funds proof, school and degree documents and health insurance, and cannot convert to a work visa from this status.

Does a Studienkolleg or language course admission qualify for a student visa?

A Studienkolleg admission qualifies for the German national student visa, because the preparatory course leads to a degree programme. A standalone language course needs a separate language-course visa with stricter checks. A conditional admission that combines a German course with a later degree place is usually treated as study preparation.

Can I work in Germany on a student visa?

Yes. A German student residence permit allows 140 full days or 280 half days of work per year, or up to 20 hours a week during lectures. Pakistani students cannot use expected job income as financial proof at the embassy, so the €11,904 must be shown in full before the visa is issued.

Can an agent get me a faster German embassy appointment?

No. The German Embassy Islamabad and the Consulate General Karachi state that registration is free and files are processed in the order received. Anyone asking for money to speed up a German visa appointment is a fraudster, according to the embassy, and should be reported to the Pakistani police.

How long is a German student visa valid?

A German national student visa is normally issued for 3 to 12 months, long enough to enter Germany and apply locally. After arrival, the local foreigners office (Ausländerbehörde) issues a residence permit for study, typically for one to two years at a time, which is renewed until the degree ends.

Is it easy to get a Germany student visa from Pakistan?

Getting a Germany student visa from Pakistan is not difficult when the file is complete and the study plan is logical. The hard part is time, because demand at the German missions exceeds capacity. Refusals mostly come from weak motivation letters, unrelated courses, missing funds proof or doubtful documents rather than from nationality.
