Study in Cyprus from Pakistan means joining a full-time course at a university registered with Cyprus's Ministry of Education, which then applies for your entry permit. Cyprus is an English-friendly EU island with lower tuition than the UK. Pakistani students must first decide between the Republic of Cyprus in the south and North Cyprus.

Why do Pakistani students choose to study in Cyprus?

Pakistani students choose Cyprus for English-taught degrees inside the EU, tuition that is lower than in the UK or Ireland, and flexible entry for FSc and 14-year degree holders. Cyprus is warm, safe and well connected by air. The trade-off is a small job market, with limited sectors open to student workers.

Cyprus is an island of about 1.3 million people in the eastern Mediterranean. Greek is the main language, while university teaching and most daily services run in English.

Degrees from the Republic of Cyprus follow the EU Bologna system, so credits are recognised across Europe. The study in Europe from Pakistan page compares Cyprus with larger countries where graduate jobs are more varied.

What is the difference between North Cyprus and South Cyprus for students?

South Cyprus is the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member with EU-recognised degrees and an EU residence permit. North Cyprus is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Türkiye, with cheaper fees and easier admission. Pakistani students reach the North through Türkiye, and its permits give no EU rights.

Many low-fee offers advertised in Pakistan come from North Cyprus. The North Cyprus universities for Pakistani students page explains degree recognition, the Turkish transit visa and how to verify a programme.

The rest of this guide covers the Republic of Cyprus, where an EU permit and EU-wide degree recognition apply. Every rule below comes from the Republic's Migration Department.

Which universities in Cyprus accept Pakistani students?

The Republic of Cyprus has three public universities and several private ones. Pakistani students most often join private universities such as the University of Nicosia, European University Cyprus, Frederick University and Neapolis University, because public universities teach many Bachelor's programmes in Greek. Every institution must be registered with the Ministry of Education.

Colleges offering diplomas also accept Pakistani students. The Migration Department only issues study permits when the institution and programme are registered, so check the Ministry of Education register before paying a deposit.

Online or distance courses, including the Open University of Cyprus, do not qualify for a study entry permit. Students on such courses cannot use them to live in Cyprus.

How much does it cost to study in Cyprus from Pakistan?

Studying in Cyprus costs most Pakistani students about PKR 45–65 lakh for the first year. That covers private-university tuition of roughly €7,000–10,000, living costs of about €700–1,000 a month, insurance and permit fees. Nicosia and Limassol are the priciest cities, while Larnaca and Paphos cost slightly less.

The official permit fees come from the Migration Department; the tuition and living ranges are budgeting estimates. Check each programme's fee on the university's own website, because medicine and pharmacy cost far more.

Cyprus often lands in a budget shortlist with Malta. The study in Malta from Pakistan page shows how another small English-speaking EU island compares on fees and rent.

What are the admission requirements for Republic of Cyprus universities?

Bachelor's admission in Cyprus usually needs FSc, ICS or A Levels with at least 50–60% marks. Master's applicants need a recognised Bachelor's degree, and many universities accept 14-year degrees for selected programmes. Most institutions ask for IELTS 5.5–6.0 or an equivalent, a passport, attested documents and sometimes an interview.

  • Bachelor's: FSc, ICS, DAE or A Levels, with marks set by each programme.
  • Master's: a related Bachelor's degree; some programmes accept a 14-year BA or BSc.
  • English: IELTS, PTE, Duolingo or the university's own placement test.
  • Documents: attested certificates, transcripts, passport copy and a short CV.
  • Some programmes: a motivation letter, interview or portfolio.

School certificates and A Level results usually need IBCC attestation first. The IBCC equivalence for O and A Levels page explains that step, and the HEC degree attestation process covers university degrees.

Students unsure which English test to take can compare score bands in the PTE vs IELTS page. Most Cyprus universities accept either test at similar bands.

How do Pakistani students apply to study in Cyprus step by step?

Pakistani students apply to study in Cyprus by securing an offer, paying the deposit, and letting the university file the entry permit with the Migration Department. After approval they travel, register in the Aliens Register within seven days and apply for a temporary residence permit. The whole route usually takes three to four months.

  1. 1Shortlist registered universities. Confirm the institution and programme appear on the Ministry of Education register.
  2. 2Apply and get an offer. Send attested documents and an English score; offers often arrive within two to three weeks.
  3. 3Pay the deposit. Universities usually ask for part of the first-year tuition before filing the entry permit.
  4. 4Send permit documents. Give the university your passport copy, police certificate, funds proof and medical papers.
  5. 5Wait for the entry permit. The Migration Department and Ministry of Education examine complete files within about one month.
  6. 6Travel to Cyprus. Fly to Larnaca or Paphos with the approved entry permit and original documents.
  7. 7Register within seven days. Enrol in the Aliens Register, give biometrics and apply for the temporary residence permit.

Because the university files the entry permit, choosing an honest institution matters more in Cyprus than in most countries. The Cyprus student visa for Pakistanis page lists every permit document, fee and common refusal reason.

When are the intakes for Cyprus universities?

Cyprus universities run two main intakes: September or October, and January or February. Some private universities add a smaller summer start. Pakistani students should apply at least four months before the intake, because the entry permit takes about a month after a complete file and documents from Pakistan take time.

Summer is the busiest period at the Migration Department, so files sent in May or June face fewer delays than those sent in August. A late file can push the start to the spring intake.

Can students work part-time while studying in Cyprus?

Students in Cyprus may work up to 20 hours a week during term and up to 38 hours a week in breaks. Jobs are limited to sectors set by the Labour Ministry, such as restaurants, cleaning, delivery, agriculture and care work. Each employment contract must be approved by a District Labour Office first.

  • Sign a written contract with the employer and attach your study timetable.
  • Submit the contract to the District Labour Office for approval before starting work.
  • Stay inside the approved sectors; office or IT jobs are usually outside them.
  • Keep a record of hours, because exceeding 20 hours in term can block permit renewal.
  • Domestic work in private homes is allowed with the official employer record form.

Wages in permitted sectors are modest, so part-time work covers part of rent and food, not tuition. Students who want wider job access compare Cyprus with the study in Ireland from Pakistan page, where students can work in any sector.

Can Pakistani graduates stay in Cyprus after their studies?

Graduates of a Master's degree or higher in Cyprus can apply to stay for up to 12 months to look for work or set up a business. Bachelor's graduates do not qualify for this stay. The job or business must match the level of the completed degree, and a residence permit application is required.

This rule makes the study level a strategic choice. A Pakistani student planning to work in Cyprus after study gains far more from a Master's than from a Bachelor's.

Graduates who find a skilled job switch to an employment-based permit through the employer. Students comparing post-study rights across Europe can read the study in Netherlands from Pakistan page, where the orientation year applies to more graduates.

What mistakes should Pakistani students avoid when choosing Cyprus?

The biggest mistakes are confusing North and South Cyprus, paying an unregistered college, relying on a promised job to cover fees, and choosing a Bachelor's while expecting the post-study stay. Each mistake can cost a deposit, a refused permit or years spent on a degree with limited recognition.

  • Accepting a North Cyprus offer while believing it gives an EU permit.
  • Paying a deposit before checking the Ministry of Education register.
  • Trusting agents who promise full-time work alongside study.
  • Working without a Labour Office–approved contract.
  • Arriving late and missing the seven-day Aliens Register deadline.
  • Expecting a Bachelor's degree to give the 12-month job-search stay.

Study in Cyprus from Pakistan, frequently asked questions

Is Cyprus in the Schengen Area?

No. The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member that has not yet joined Schengen in full, so a Cyprus student permit does not automatically allow visits to Schengen countries. Pakistani students who want to travel to Italy or France during holidays usually need a separate Schengen visa from that country.

Can I study in Cyprus without IELTS?

Several private universities in Cyprus accept an English-medium certificate from Pakistan or run their own English placement test instead of IELTS. Students with weak English may join a preparatory English year first. The Migration Department still checks that the course is genuine, so a weak English record can raise questions.

Is Cyprus cheaper than the UK for Pakistani students?

Cyprus is usually cheaper than the UK. Tuition at private Cypriot universities often runs about €7,000–10,000 a year against £15,000 or more in the UK, and rent outside Nicosia and Limassol is lower. Cyprus offers fewer graduate jobs, so the lower cost comes with a smaller career market.

Which scholarships are available in Cyprus for Pakistani students?

Scholarships in Cyprus for Pakistani students are mostly tuition discounts of 20–50% offered by private universities on admission, often linked to marks. Government-funded full scholarships for Pakistanis are rare. Students should treat any discount as a reduction in tuition, because the funds rule for living costs still applies.

Can Pakistani students get PR in Cyprus after study?

Study years alone rarely lead to permanent residence in Cyprus. Graduates who find skilled work move onto an employment permit, and long-term residence requires years of legal stay under other categories. Pakistani students should choose Cyprus for the degree and EU exposure, not as a quick settlement route.

Is Cyprus safe for Pakistani students?

Cyprus has low violent crime and a sizeable South Asian community in Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol. The main risks students report are unlicensed agents, fake job offers and unpaid wages. Checking the employer's Labour Office approval protects student workers, because working without it can cost the permit.

Can I transfer credits from Cyprus to a UK university?

Some Cyprus colleges run progression routes where students study one or two years in Cyprus and finish the degree at a partner UK university. These routes depend on a signed partner agreement, and a UK student visa is still required for the final years. Ask for the agreement in writing before enrolling.

Can I bring my spouse to Cyprus on a student permit?

Students on a Cyprus study permit generally cannot sponsor a spouse or children. Family members need their own visa category, and approvals for dependants of students are uncommon. Pakistani students who plan to travel with family should confirm the current position with the Migration Department before accepting an offer.
