Why do Pakistani students choose to study in Hungary?

Pakistani students choose to study in Hungary for low tuition, lower living costs than Western Europe, easy-to-enter English-taught degrees, popular medical programmes and the HEC-nominated Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship. A Hungarian study permit also allows up to 30 hours of work a week and a post-study job-search permit.

Universities such as Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs are well known for medicine, while ELTE, BME and Corvinus attract students in science, engineering and business. Budapest is a Schengen capital, so a Hungarian permit allows short trips across Europe. The Schengen visa from Pakistan page explains how that differs from a short-stay visa.

Hungarian is needed for many local jobs. Families comparing options should also read the tuition-free route to Germany from Pakistan and the full Europe country comparison.

What are the entry requirements for Pakistani students in Hungary?

Pakistani students need FSc, ICS or A-Levels for a Bachelor's, FSc pre-medical for medicine and usually a 16-year degree for a Master's. Most Hungarian universities also ask for IELTS 5.5–6.5 or their own English test, HEC-attested documents and an entrance test or interview for the chosen programme.

  • Bachelor's: FSc, ICS or A-Levels, with subject marks set by each programme.
  • Medicine and dentistry: FSc pre-medical with strong biology and chemistry, plus an entrance exam.
  • Master's: a relevant Bachelor's degree, usually 16 years of education.
  • English: IELTS 5.5–6.5, TOEFL or the university's own English test.
  • HEC-attested degree and transcripts, and IBCC-attested intermediate certificates.
  • A passport, motivation letter and sometimes a medical certificate.

Medical applicants should confirm that the degree is recognised by PMDC before paying any fee. Pakistani graduates of foreign medical schools must also pass the licensing exam to practise in Pakistan.

How do I apply to Hungarian universities from Pakistan?

Pakistani students apply directly to Hungarian universities through each university's online portal, pay the application fee and take any entrance test or interview. After receiving the admission letter, they arrange housing and apply for the study residence permit at the Embassy of Hungary in Islamabad or through Enter Hungary.

  1. 1Choose programmes. Shortlist English-taught degrees on university sites and the Study in Hungary portal.
  2. 2Check entry rules. Note marks, English score and any entrance exam for each programme.
  3. 3Apply online to the university. Most Hungarian universities take direct online applications with a fee.
  4. 4Take the entrance test or interview. Many programmes hold online tests in maths, science or English.
  5. 5Receive the admission letter. Pay the deposit or first tuition instalment if the university asks.
  6. 6Arrange housing. Book a dormitory or private room, because accommodation proof is needed for the permit.
  7. 7Apply for the residence permit. File the study permit at the Embassy of Hungary in Islamabad or through Enter Hungary, with funds proof.
  8. 8Register after arrival. Collect the permit card and complete university enrolment in Hungary.

Scholarship applicants follow a different route through Tempus and HEC. That route is explained step by step in the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship page.

Which scholarships can Pakistani students get in Hungary?

Pakistani students in Hungary mainly receive the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, which covers tuition, a monthly stipend, housing support and insurance through an HEC nomination. Other options are university tuition discounts of 10% to 50%, Erasmus Mundus joint degrees with Hungarian partners and a few smaller programme-specific awards.

How do Pakistani students get a Hungary student residence permit?

Pakistani students apply for a Hungarian residence permit for study at the Embassy of Hungary in Islamabad after admission. The file needs the admission letter, passport, accommodation proof, proof of funds for the stay and return, and health insurance. The fee at the embassy is €110, and extensions are filed in Hungary through Enter Hungary.

Extensions cost HUF 23,000 and are only possible from inside Hungary. Students must have stayed in Hungary at least 90 days in any 180-day period to renew.

Embassy appointments can be busy in summer. Applying as soon as the admission letter arrives gives the best chance of a decision before September.

When are the Hungary university intakes and deadlines?

Hungary's main intake starts in September, and self-funded applications usually run from January to June, with medicine often closing earlier. The Stipendium Hungaricum round runs from November to mid-January. Pakistani students then apply for the permit between May and August, and a few programmes also offer a February intake.

HEC and IBCC attestation should be finished by December. Early preparation lets a student apply for the scholarship and a self-funded backup in the same year.

Can Pakistani students work and stay in Hungary after study?

Yes. Students with a Hungarian study permit may work up to 30 hours a week during the study period and full-time for up to 90 days a year outside it. After graduation, students can apply for a residence permit to seek a job or start a business, then switch to a work permit with a job offer.

English-speaking jobs exist in Budapest's service centres and IT firms. Smaller cities offer fewer roles without Hungarian.

The work limit is more generous than Sweden's 15 hours in term. The study in Sweden from Pakistan page compares that rule.

Which mistakes delay Pakistani students applying to Hungary?

The mistakes that most often delay Pakistani students applying to Hungary are relying only on Stipendium Hungaricum, booking housing late, expecting part-time work to cover tuition, choosing a medical programme without checking PMDC recognition, missing entrance-test dates and leaving the permit application until August.

  • Applying only for Stipendium Hungaricum with no self-funded backup programme.
  • Booking housing too late, which blocks the residence permit file.
  • Assuming 30 hours of part-time work will cover tuition.
  • Choosing an unaccredited medical programme without checking PMDC recognition.
  • Missing the entrance-test date after paying the application fee.
  • Leaving the permit application until August, close to the course start.

Study in Hungary from Pakistan, frequently asked questions

Is study in Hungary cheap for Pakistani students?

Yes, by European standards. Self-funded Pakistani students in Hungary usually pay about €2,500–9,000 a year in tuition, while medicine and dentistry cost more. Living costs of roughly €450–700 a month are lower than in Western Europe. Stipendium Hungaricum winners pay no tuition at all.

Can I study in Hungary after FSc?

Yes. Hungarian universities offer many English-taught Bachelor's degrees that accept FSc, ICS or A-Levels, usually with an online entrance test or interview. Medicine and dentistry need FSc pre-medical with strong biology and chemistry marks. Each university sets its own minimum marks and English score.

Is IELTS required to study in Hungary?

Not always. Many Hungarian universities accept IELTS 5.5–6.5, TOEFL or their own online English test, and some accept an English-medium certificate from a Pakistani institution. The Stipendium Hungaricum programme lists the language rule per course, so always check the exact programme page.

How much does the Hungary student residence permit cost?

The residence permit for study costs €110 when the application is filed at a Hungarian embassy or consulate, according to the EU Immigration Portal. Extensions inside Hungary cost HUF 23,000. The fee is paid at the mission, usually in euro.

Can I work while studying in Hungary?

Yes. Students with a Hungarian study residence permit may work up to 30 hours a week during the study period, and full-time for up to 90 days a year outside it. Part-time pay in Hungary is modest, so work income should support the budget rather than replace it.

Is Hungary better than Germany for Pakistani students?

Germany has tuition-free public universities but asks for a €11,904 blocked account. Hungary charges tuition and has lower living costs, easier admission and many English-taught medical degrees. Hungary also offers the HEC-nominated Stipendium Hungaricum, which makes it nearly free for scholarship winners.

Can I stay in Hungary after graduation?

Yes. Graduates with a valid study permit who finish their degree can apply for a residence permit to seek a job or start a business in Hungary. A job offer then allows a switch to a work-based permit. Check the current permit length with the immigration authority before graduating.
