What is uni-assist and what does it do?
uni-assist (University Application Service for International Students) is a registered association in Berlin that evaluates foreign school and university certificates for its member universities. uni-assist checks whether Pakistani qualifications meet German entry rules, converts grades into the German scale and forwards complete applications. The German university, not uni-assist, then decides on admission.
German universities receive applications from more than 150 countries. Instead of each admissions office learning every foreign education system, member universities send international files to uni-assist for a common formal check. Germany is only one of several low-fee European study destinations compared for Pakistanis.
The service is fully digital through the My assist portal. Official rules and the current checklist are on the uni-assist website for international applicants.
Which German universities use uni-assist for Pakistani applicants?
Around 180 German universities use uni-assist, including many public universities, technical universities and universities of applied sciences. Others, such as the Technical University of Munich, accept international applications on their own portals. Each course page states the correct route, so Pakistani students should confirm it for every course before paying any fee.
- uni-assist only: the university forwards every international file to uni-assist.
- VPD route: uni-assist issues a grade report, and the student applies directly to the university.
- Direct portal: the university checks documents itself and never uses uni-assist.
- Mixed: one university may use uni-assist for Bachelor's and its own portal for Master's.
The member list on uni-assist.de is the starting point. FSc holders usually apply first to a Studienkolleg, explained in the Studienkolleg route after FSc. Choosing which German universities fit your degree and budget is covered in the study in Germany from Pakistan page, and state university names and fee exceptions sit in the German public universities list.
What is a VPD and do you need one?
VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation, preliminary review documentation): a uni-assist report stating which certificates were submitted, how uni-assist evaluates them and the applicant's converted German grade. Some universities require a VPD, after which the Pakistani student applies directly to the university and uploads the VPD there. The fee is the same as a standard application.
A VPD is issued for one specific university, not for Germany in general. A Pakistani applicant targeting three VPD universities therefore pays for three VPD requests.
Universities using the VPD often set the VPD deadline weeks before their own application deadline. Reading both dates prevents the common problem of receiving the VPD after the university portal has closed.
Which documents do Pakistani applicants upload to uni-assist?
Pakistani applicants upload a passport copy, IBCC-attested Matric and FSc certificates, HEC-attested degree and transcripts for Master's courses, a letter showing the minimum passing grade, and a language certificate. Some courses also ask for a CV or motivation letter. Clear colour scans of attested originals are uploaded as PDF files in My assist.
- Passport data page, with the name matching every other document.
- Matric and FSc (or O/A-Level) certificates with mark sheets, attested by IBCC.
- Bachelor's degree and transcripts attested by HEC, for Master's applications.
- A university letter stating the grading scale and minimum passing grade.
- IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF or Goethe certificate, depending on the course language.
- CV, motivation letter or course-specific forms, only when the university asks for them.
The minimum passing grade letter matters most for Pakistani CGPAs. uni-assist uses the top grade, the pass grade and your result in the modified Bavarian grade conversion, and a missing pass grade can delay or weaken the conversion.
Documents not in English or German need certified translations. Most Pakistani certificates are already issued in English, so translation is rarely needed.
How do you apply on My assist step by step?
Applying through uni-assist takes six steps on the My assist portal: check the course rules, register one account, choose courses, answer the application questions, upload documents, then pay and submit. uni-assist starts processing only after submission and payment, so Pakistani applicants should finish all six steps well before the university deadline.
- 1Check the course page. Confirm on the university website that the course uses uni-assist and whether a VPD is required.
- 2Register on My assist. Create one account with your passport name and personal email.
- 3Choose your courses. Search by university and semester, then add each course to the selection list.
- 4Answer the application questions. Complete every university-specific question truthfully.
- 5Upload your documents. Upload clear colour scans of attested originals as PDF files.
- 6Pay and submit. Pay the handling fee by card or transfer and submit; processing starts after submission.
uni-assist e-mails updates and requests for missing documents. Checking the inbox and spam folder daily during processing prevents a missed request from cancelling the application.
How much are uni-assist fees and how do you pay from Pakistan?
uni-assist fees are €75 for the first chosen course in a semester and €30 for each additional course, at any member university. The same fees apply to VPD requests and are charged again when reapplying in a new semester. Pakistani applicants usually pay by international debit or credit card, because bank transfers can take up to two weeks.
| Application | uni-assist fee (EUR) | Approx. in PKR |
|---|---|---|
| First course in a semester | €75 | ≈ PKR 24,000 |
| Each additional course (same semester) | €30 | ≈ PKR 9,600 |
| Example: 3 courses at 2 universities | €135 | ≈ PKR 43,000 |
| Example: 5 courses | €195 | ≈ PKR 62,000 |
| Reapplying in a new semester | €75 + €30 per extra course again | ≈ PKR 24,000 upward |
| Course where the university pays the fee | €0 | Shown in My assist |
Fees follow the official uni-assist handling fee page. PKR figures use €1 ≈ PKR 320 (3 Oct 2026).
Paying the fee from a Pakistani bank
A Pakistani debit or credit card enabled for international online payments is the fastest option. Many banks ask customers to activate international e-commerce in the app first, and a small foreign-transaction charge is added.
A SWIFT bank transfer also works when the application number is quoted as the reference. Transfers from Pakistan can take up to two weeks, and processing does not start until uni-assist confirms receipt. The handling fee is small next to the €11,904 blocked account deposit for the visa.

How long does uni-assist take before university deadlines?
uni-assist processing usually takes several weeks, and uni-assist recommends applying at least eight weeks before the university deadline. Deadlines are often 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester. Many Master's courses and Studienkollegs set earlier dates, so Pakistani applicants should check each course page.
- Winter semester: many courses close on 15 July, and popular Master's courses often close between 31 March and 31 May.
- Summer semester: many courses close on 15 January.
- Peak months: processing slows in May–July and December–January.
- Current times: uni-assist publishes live processing times on its deadlines page.
The uni-assist deadline is the university's own deadline. A complete file submitted early leaves time to add a missing document; a file submitted in the last week usually does not. Course-by-course planning sits in the German winter and summer intake calendar.
What does your uni-assist result mean?
A uni-assist result tells you whether your Pakistani certificates meet the formal entry rules and what your converted German grade is. A positive result means the file is forwarded to the university for the admission decision. A negative result means a formal requirement is missing, such as a 16-year degree or the required subject background.
A positive uni-assist result is not an admission letter. Competitive German universities still rank applicants by grade, subject fit and motivation, and many applicants with a positive check still receive rejections.
After a real admission, the next stages are proof of funds and the visa. Those are covered in the German blocked account page and the Germany student visa process from Pakistan.
Which uni-assist mistakes cost Pakistani applicants a semester?
The uni-assist mistakes that most often cost Pakistani applicants a semester are paying agents who claim a uni-assist partnership, applying in the last weeks, uploading unattested or unclear documents, forgetting the minimum passing grade letter, paying for unsuitable courses and creating duplicate My assist accounts. Each one delays or blocks the formal check.
- Paying an agent who claims a “uni-assist partnership”; uni-assist states that it cooperates with no commercial agencies.
- Applying in the last two weeks, leaving no time to fix a missing document before the deadline.
- Uploading HEC-unattested degrees or blurred mobile photos instead of clear scans.
- Forgetting the minimum passing grade letter, which uni-assist needs to convert a Pakistani CGPA.
- Paying for many courses without checking each course's grade and subject rules first.
- Creating a second My assist account after forgetting the password.
Shortlisting courses carefully saves the most money, since every extra course costs €30. A free German course shortlist with our study abroad consultants checks your CGPA and subject fit before you pay uni-assist.
uni-assist for Pakistani students, frequently asked questions
What is the uni-assist login and My assist account?
My assist is the uni-assist online portal where applicants register, choose courses, upload documents, pay fees and track results. Pakistani applicants should create only one My assist account with their passport name and a personal email, because uni-assist warns that multiple registrations can cause problems with an application.
Can I edit a uni-assist application after submitting it?
Documents can still be uploaded to My assist after submission until uni-assist starts checking the file, and missing papers can be added when uni-assist asks for them. Course choices that are already paid cannot simply be swapped. Check every answer carefully before paying the uni-assist handling fee.
Can I apply to several German universities with one uni-assist fee?
No. uni-assist charges per chosen course: €75 for the first course in a semester and €30 for each additional course, at the same or a different university. Five courses therefore cost €195. Some universities pay the handling fee for their applicants, which My assist shows in the selection list.
Does uni-assist give admission to a German university?
No. uni-assist only checks whether foreign certificates meet the formal entry rules and converts grades into the German system. The German university then makes the admission decision and sends the offer or rejection. A positive uni-assist check does not guarantee a place on a competitive course.
Is uni-assist needed for a Studienkolleg application?
Many Studienkollegs in Germany take applications through uni-assist, and the same €75 + €30 fee system applies. Others, especially at universities of applied sciences, accept applications directly. Pakistani FSc students should check the Studienkolleg's own website, because entrance test dates and deadlines often fall earlier than degree deadlines.
Can I get a refund of uni-assist fees?
uni-assist fees are generally not refunded once checking has started, because the handling fee pays for the evaluation regardless of the result. A paid amount that has not been used for an application can sometimes remain as credit in My assist for a later application. Read the refund rules in My assist before paying.
How do I contact uni-assist from Pakistan?
Pakistani applicants contact uni-assist through the contact form in their My assist account or through the help pages on uni-assist.de. Using the application number in every message speeds up replies. Course-specific questions about deadlines, grade limits or language rules should go directly to the German university.
