North Cyprus universities are institutions in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a territory recognised only by Türkiye. They offer low fees, English-taught programmes and easy admission for Pakistani students. Their degrees are not EU degrees, so recognition for jobs, licensing and further study must be checked programme by programme before enrolling.

What does North Cyprus's political status mean for students?

North Cyprus declared itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1983, and only Türkiye recognises it. For students, this means the universities sit outside the EU higher education system, permits give no EU rights, and recognition of degrees depends on each foreign authority's own rules rather than EU agreements.

The island has been divided since 1974. The south is the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member, and the study in Cyprus from Pakistan page covers its universities and EU permit.

Agents in Pakistan sometimes sell North Cyprus as "study in Europe". Geographically that is true, though legally and academically the two systems are separate.

Are North Cyprus university degrees recognised in Pakistan?

North Cyprus degrees are not automatically recognised in Pakistan. HEC assesses each foreign degree through its equivalence process, looking at the university, programme and accreditation. Professional fields add another check, since medicine needs PMDC rules and engineering needs PEC rules. Students should confirm both before paying any tuition.

Programme-level accreditation from international bodies helps. It does not replace these checks. Ask the university for written evidence and compare it with the regulator's own list.

The HEC route itself is explained in the HEC degree attestation for study abroad page. Medical applicants should also read the MBBS in Turkey for Pakistani students page, which explains PMDC checks for a nearby system.

Which are the main universities in North Cyprus?

The best-known North Cyprus universities for international students are Eastern Mediterranean University, Near East University, Cyprus International University, European University of Lefke, Girne American University, Final International University and Cyprus West University. Middle East Technical University and Istanbul Technical University also run northern campuses linked to their Turkish parent universities.

Campuses of Turkish universities, such as METU, often carry stronger recognition because the degree links to a YÖK-listed parent. Students who want Turkish-system degrees directly can read the study in Turkey from Pakistan page.

How much do North Cyprus universities cost for Pakistani students?

Most North Cyprus universities charge Pakistani students about €3,000–6,000 a year in tuition after common discounts, with medicine and dentistry far higher. Living costs run roughly €400–600 a month. A typical first-year budget is about PKR 25–40 lakh, lower than most options in the Republic of Cyprus.

Estimated first-year cost in North Cyprus
Cost itemIn euroIn PKR (≈ €1 = PKR 320)
Tuition after typical discount€3,000 – 6,000 / year≈ PKR 9.6 – 19 lakh
Dormitory or shared flat€200 – 350 / month≈ PKR 64,000 – 1.1 lakh / month
Food, transport and phone€200 – 300 / month≈ PKR 64,000 – 96,000 / month
Preparatory English year (if needed)€2,500 – 4,000≈ PKR 8 – 13 lakh
Permit, medical and insurance€300 – 600 / year≈ PKR 1 – 1.9 lakh

Discounts of 40–75% are advertised widely, so compare the final net fee rather than the headline price. Inflation in the Turkish lira also moves local costs quickly.

What are the admission requirements for North Cyprus universities?

North Cyprus universities usually admit Pakistani students with FSc, ICS or A Levels for Bachelor's degrees and a recognised Bachelor's for Master's degrees. Most do not require IELTS, because they test English on arrival. An unconditional acceptance letter is issued quickly, often within a week, once attested documents and the deposit arrive.

  • Bachelor's: Intermediate or A Level results, often with low minimum marks.
  • Master's: a related Bachelor's degree; 14-year degrees are often accepted.
  • English: the university's own proficiency test or a preparatory year.
  • Documents: attested certificates, passport copy and photos.
  • Medicine and dentistry: higher marks and limited seats.

Those who need an English score for later study can see the PTE and IELTS score comparison. Easy admission is not the same as a strong outcome. Students should judge the programme's recognition and graduate results, not how quickly the offer arrives.

How do Pakistani students enter North Cyprus and get a student permit?

Pakistani students get a TRNC study visa after receiving an unconditional acceptance letter, then fly to Ercan through Türkiye, sometimes needing a Turkish transit visa. After university registration they complete online immigration steps, health checks and fees to obtain a student residence permit, usually with help from the university's international office.

  1. 1Get the unconditional acceptance letter. The university issues it after documents and the deposit are received.
  2. 2Apply for the TRNC study visa. Pakistani nationals apply through the university after acceptance.
  3. 3Check the Turkish transit rule. Confirm with the airline whether your route needs a Turkish transit visa.
  4. 4Fly to Ercan via Türkiye. Carry the acceptance letter, visa approval and original documents.
  5. 5Register at the university. Complete enrolment and the English test on arrival.
  6. 6Complete health checks. Take the required medical tests at an approved hospital.
  7. 7Collect the residence permit. Finish the online immigration steps and pay permit fees.

This permit system is separate from the south. Students choosing the Republic of Cyprus instead follow the Cyprus student entry permit page.

What risks should Pakistani students weigh before choosing North Cyprus?

The main risks are uncertain degree recognition, very limited work rights, no EU travel or residence, and agents who sell North Cyprus as a route into Europe. Students also report difficulty transferring credits. These risks matter less for students who plan to return to Pakistan or move to Türkiye.

  • Assuming a TRNC degree equals an EU degree.
  • Planning to cross into the south to work, which the permit does not allow.
  • Choosing medicine without checking PMDC rules first.
  • Relying on part-time income for living costs.
  • Paying an agent instead of the university directly.

Students who want a low-cost EU degree can compare the study in Hungary from Pakistan page and the Türkiye Burslari scholarship page, a fully funded route into Turkish universities. Both give a degree inside a recognised national system.

Who should and should not choose North Cyprus?

North Cyprus suits Pakistani students with a tight budget who want an English-taught degree, plan to return home or move to Türkiye, and choose a programme with clear recognition. North Cyprus suits students poorly when they want EU work rights, a licensed profession abroad or a route to European residence.

A short self-test helps: if the plan after graduation needs EU rights, North Cyprus is the wrong first step. If the plan is a recognised degree at low cost, it can work.

A free North Cyprus recognition check with our education consultants in Pakistan reviews a specific university and programme against HEC and professional-council rules before you pay. Students still comparing the two halves of the island can read the South vs North Cyprus comparison.

North Cyprus universities, frequently asked questions

Is North Cyprus part of the EU?

No. North Cyprus is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Türkiye. EU law is suspended in the north, so a North Cyprus student permit gives no EU residence, work or travel rights. A Pakistani student there needs separate visas to visit the Republic of Cyprus or other EU countries.

Can I work while studying in North Cyprus?

Paid work for international students in North Cyprus is tightly limited, and many students rely on campus jobs or none at all. Rules change often, so confirm the current position with the university's international office. Pakistani students should plan to fund living costs fully from home, not from part-time work.

Is MBBS in North Cyprus valid in Pakistan?

A North Cyprus medical degree is valid for practice in Pakistan only if the graduate meets PMDC rules for foreign medical graduates, including licensing exams. Pakistani students should check the current PMDC position on the specific university before enrolling, because recognition is not automatic for medicine from the north.

Can I transfer from North Cyprus to a European university?

Transfers from North Cyprus to European universities are possible and uncommon, because many EU institutions assess TRNC credits individually or refuse them. A student planning to continue in Europe usually does better studying in an EU country from the start. Check the target university's credit-transfer policy in writing first.

Do I need IELTS for North Cyprus universities?

Most North Cyprus universities do not require IELTS from Pakistani students. They run their own English proficiency test on arrival and place weaker students in a preparatory English year. That year adds tuition and living costs, so students with an English-medium background should ask for an exemption.

How do Pakistani students travel to North Cyprus?

Pakistani students fly to Ercan airport in North Cyprus through an airport in Türkiye, usually Istanbul. Students may need a Turkish transit visa, depending on the airport and ticket, so they check the rule with the airline before booking. Flying into Larnaca in the south and crossing north creates entry problems.
